8.2 Defining Titles and Characteristics
This screen permits the entry of the various titles and style
characteristics of the graph. It is accessed by depressing F7 on the
graph labels and values screen. Below is a sample of the screen.
Title______________________________ Justify_ R L or C
Sub-Title______________________________ Justify_ R L or C
Chart Window_ (Y)es (No) Legend_ (N)o (U)p (B)ottom (O)verlay
Tilling_ (Y)es (N)o
PIE:Percentages_ (Y)es (N)o Chart Value_ (1-6)
BAR/COLUMN: Bars_ (P)lain (S)tacked
LINE/SCATTER: Plot_ (P)oints (L)ines
X-Axis Title_______________ Y-Axis Title_______________
ESC=Returns to Value Entry
Title : This is the main title of the graph. It has 3 justification
options, R=Right L=Left C=Centered.
Sub Title : This is an optional Sub Title for the graph. The same
justification options apply.
Chart Window : Entering a Y places a Frame around the graph. Entering an
N removes the window.
Legend : This provides a legend for the labels. N=No legend will
be displayed. U=Places the legend in the upper right part
of the screen. B=Places the legend at the bottom of the
screen. O=Overlays the legend in the chart window.
Tilling : Y=Yes N=No. If Y is selected, the charts will be displayed
in black and white with the colors exchanged with patterns.
Tilling should be selected when printing, unless you are
using a color printer.
Percentages : Y=Yes N=No. This pertains only to Pie charts. Entering a
Y will display percentages beside each pie slice.
Chart Value : This pertains only to Pie charts. Since there are 6
available values, enter 1 through 6 to determine which
value you want graphed. 1 is the default.
Bars : P=Plain S=Stacked. This pertains only the Bar/Column
charts. P places the bars or columns side by side while
S stacks the bars or columns in a single row.
Plot : P=Points only L=Points and lines. P will display only
points on the graph while L will display the points
connected with lines.
X-axis Title : This pertains to all charts except the Pie chart.
Y-axis Title : This pertains to all charts except the Pie chart.
8.3 Chart Categories
The Chart Categories are entered for all charts except the Pie chart.
This should be a descriptive name for all values that fall directly
below it. There are 6 categories in all. In the sample chart Demo
the categories are "One", "Two", "Three" etc.
8.4 Chart Labels
The Chart Labels is the leftmost column of data falling under the
heading Labels. Normally labels are the time periods of the plotting
such as months, weeks etc. In the sample chart DEMO, the labels are
months.
8.5 Chart Values
Chart values are the actual numeric data that is plotted. The values
correspond to the label that is to the left, and the category that is
above it. They are placed in columnar format. If you're plotting a
single value chart, the only the left most column should be entered.
Zero or blank entries are always omitted from the charting.
If you're plotting multiseries charts, each column of values must
contain an equal number of entries.
8.6 Saving & Retrieving Graphs
To save a graph, depress F10 while displaying the Labels and Values
screen. Enter the file name to save it as, omit the file extension as
.GRP is automatic, and then depress F10 again. For existing files you
can change the file name and save it as another name if you wish
keeping the original graph file in tact.
To retrieve a graph, depress F4 while displaying the labels and Values
screen. Use the cursor keys to highlight the selection, then depress
return. The graph data will be displayed.
9.0 Chart Styles and Values
Pie - This is a single series chart. Single series means it can
only chart a single column of values. You can select which
of the 6 value columns you would like to chart.
Bar - These can be single or multiple series values. When filling
Column in multiple value columns, it is necessary to start from
Line left to right. Do not fill in value column 1, then skip
value column 2 then fill in value column 3. The program
reads the value columns from left to right.
Column -
Scatter - The scatter chart is always in pairs of values. For example
value column 1 and value column 2 must be filled as these are
the X & Y axis plot values respectively. The 1st category
entry would be tagged for both values. This entry would be
considered a single series chart.
Scatter charts can have only a maximum of 3 category pairs
for charting. Value columns 1 & 2 Value columns 3 & 4
and Value columns 5 & 6. The categories selected would
be 1 3 & 4. It always selects the 1st category in the
value pair.
10.0 Printing Graphs
Graphs can be printed in two ways 1) using the DOS GRAPHICS.COM
and 2) using PC-GraphIT's built in print capability.
10.1 Printing Using DOS GRAPHICS.COM
To print a graph the DOS program GRAPHICS.COM must be installed in
memory. Refer to your dos manual for information on GRAPHICS.COM.
While a graph is displayed, depress SHIFT + PRTSC to print the
graph. The printer must be capable of printing graphics characters.
10.2 Printing using the built in print feature
Depress F3 while displaying the Labels and Values screen. The graph
will be temporarily displayed until printed. You will then be returned
to the Labels and Values screen.
Note - If you're using a non color printer, you should select the
tilling feature. Otherwise all graph data charted will be
printed in black.
11.0 Command Line Processing
Command Line Processing can be used to make PC-Graphit transparent
when called by other external programs. By calling the program and
passing parameters to it, a graph can be displayed or printed,
without displaying any of PC-GraphIT's menus or input forms.
PC-GraphIT may be started with command parameters passed to it
from the DOS command line. This feature will enable you to directly
display or print a graph, or simply load a file and bypass the
menu screen. When starting PC-GraphIT from the command line, it
requires three parameters. 1) Graph Type 2) Action wanted and
3) The complete file name.
Graph Types - The Graph Type is a one character (alpha) depicting
the type or style of graph wanted. The types are
P,B,C,L or S.
P=Pie B=Bar C=Column L=Line S=Scatter
Action - The Action code is a 2 character (alpha) code.
The first character depicts whether the graph is
to be displayed or printed. This code is a
D (display) or P (print). The second code is a N or
E. N=normal processing or the graph input form will
be displayed with the graph file data displayed.
E=exit program. Upon selecting the E option, the program
will exit after displaying or printing the graph.
File Name - This is the complete filename, including extension.
Creating files with PC-GraphIT always creates a file
with the extension .grp. However it is not necessary
for your file to have this extension if you've created
a PC-GraphIT graph file externally. Keep in mind when
selecting files while in PC-GraphIT, only files with
the extension of .grp will be presented for selecting.
The command line format is: graphit [graph type] [action] [filename]
Here some examples of command line processing:
graphit p de demo.grp (Display a pie graph then exit)
graphit p dn demo.grp (Load file and display file data)
graphit b pe demo.grp (Print a bar graph then exit)
11.0 Graph Files - Text Format
PC-GraphIT's files are in a Text format. You can access, create, modify
any of the graph files by using a word processor or text editor. For
programmers wanting to create graph files from their own programs,
this makes it a simple task. The fields are separated by commas. Many
data-base products support this type of delineation. A graph file
contains a total of 35 data records. Below is the sample DEMO.GRP
that is included with PC-GraphIT. Following it will be further
samples with field descriptions and sizes. The record numbers are
annotated to the left and are not included in the file.

14.0 DEFINITION OF SHAREWARE
Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software
before buying it. If you try a Shareware program and continue
using it, you are expected to register. Individual programs
differ on details -- some request registration while others
require it, some specify a maximum trial period. With
registration, you get anything from the simple right to continue
using the software to an updated program with printed manual.
Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial software,
and the copyright holder retains all rights, with a few specific
exceptions as stated below. Shareware authors are accomplished
programmers, just like commercial authors, and the programs are
of comparable quality. (In both cases, there are good programs
and bad ones!) The main difference is in the method of
distribution. The author specifically grants the right to copy
and distribute the software, either to all and sundry or to a
specific group. For example, some authors require written
permission before a commercial disk vendor may copy their
Shareware.
Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software. You
should find software that suits your needs and pocketbook,
whether it's commercial or Shareware. The Shareware system makes
fitting your needs easier, because you can try before you buy.
And because the overhead is low, prices are low also. Shareware
has the ultimate money-back guarantee -- if you don't use the
product, you don't pay for it.
DISCLAIMER - AGREEMENT
Users of PC-GraphIT must accept this disclaimer of warranty:
"PC-GraphIT is supplied as is. The author disclaims all
warranties, expressed or implied, including, without limitation,
the warranties of merchantability and of fitness for any purpose.
The author assumes no liability for damages, direct or conse-
quential, which may result from the use of PC-GraphIT."
PC-GraphIT is a "shareware program" and is provided at no charge
to the user for evaluation. Feel free to share it with your
friends, but please do not give it away altered or as part of
another system. The essence of "user-supported" software is to
provide personal computer users with quality software without
high prices, and yet to provide incentive for programmers to
continue to develop new products. If you find this program
useful and find that you are using PC-GraphIT and continue to use
PC-GraphIT after a reasonable trial period, you must make a reg-
istration payment of $29.95 to Nightware. The $29.95
registration fee will license one copy for use on any one
computer at any one time. You must treat this software just like
a book. An example is that this software may be used by any
number of people and may be freely moved from one computer
location to another, so long as there is no possibility of it
being used at one location while it's being used at another.
Just as a book cannot be read by two different persons at the
same time.
Commercial users of PC-GraphIT must register and pay for their
copies of PC-GraphIT within 30 days of first use or their license
is withdrawn. Site-License arrangements may be made by con-
tacting Nightware.
Anyone distributing PC-GraphIT for any kind of remuneration must
first contact Nightware at the address below for authorization.
This authorization will be automatically granted to distributors
recognized by Nightware as adhering to its guidelines for
shareware distributors, and such distributors may begin offering
PC-GraphIT immediately (However Nightware must still be advised so
that the distributor can be kept up-to-date with the latest
version of PC-GraphIT.).
You are encouraged to pass a copy of PC-GraphIT along to your
friends for evaluation. Please encourage them to register their
copy if they find that they can use it. All registered users
will receive a copy of the latest version of the PC-GraphIT
system along with 90 days free support.
15.0 To register PC-GraphIT send $29.95 plus $1.50 shipping and handling
